Eben Etzebeth Poised for Historic Achievement with Springboks
Eben Etzebeth is set to make South African rugby history as he approaches his 128th Test cap, becoming the most-capped player for the Springboks.
This milestone coincides with a crucial match against Argentina on Saturday, 28 September, where South Africa aims to secure their first full Rugby Championship title since 2009.
Having matched Victor Matfield’s previous record, Etzebeth’s achievement is celebrated by teammates and fans alike.
Bongi Mbonambi expressed the team’s commitment to making this occasion special for the 32-year-old lock, acknowledging his respected status within the squad and his significant contributions to South African rugby.
Mbonambi, who has shared a journey with Etzebeth since their youth, highlighted the balance he strikes between competitiveness and camaraderie.
“To see him reach this milestone in his career, it’s pretty amazing … What I’ve learned from him is just to have a balance between the two. It can’t just be rugby and it can’t just be family,” he recently told a sports news outlet.
“Eben is the guy who has got a balance with that. That, for me, stands out about the man that he is.”
With the Springboks needing just one point to clinch the championship, the team is determined to honour the occasion with a resounding victory at Mbombela Stadium in Mbombela, Mpumalanga.
