Blitzboks Aim to Reclaim Glory in Canada
The Springbok Sevens team heads into the Vancouver leg of the HSBC SVNS Series, determined to turn their recent struggles around.
Despite past success in Canada – winning three titles, including Commonwealth gold – the Blitzboks have endured inconsistent performances, finishing ninth in 2024 and failing to reach their previous heights.
During an interview with a local rugby publication on Wednesday, 19 February, co-captain Impi Visser emphasised their focus on execution over results, but acknowledged the significance of a strong performance.
“Last time around, we were a bit disjointed, and it showed in our play,” he said.
Sharing captaincy with Selvyn Davids after Zain Davids’ injury, Visser believes their success hinges on teamwork.
“We have some brilliant individual players who really bring something to the party, so the key for us is to combine as a team in order to benefit from those skilled players,” he added.
A strong showing in Vancouver would not only boost morale, but also provide momentum for the Grand Finale in Los Angeles, California. While execution remains their priority, the Blitzboks are eager to reclaim their place atop the podium.
They currently are fourth in the series standings after a solid campaign, winning the Cape Town Sevens and finishing fourth in Perth, Australia. They aim to break into the top three, with key players like playmaker Tristan Leyds and speedster Sebastian Jobb boosting their attack.
Their campaign kicks off against New Zealand tomorrow, Friday 21 February, followed by games against Ireland and Australia the next day in the challenging “Pool of Death.”
